"In the Bible, God tells us for everything there is a season, and for me, for
now, this season of being an elected official has come to a close. I do not
intend to run for president in 2008."
Frist acknowledges that his career as an elected official will come to a close at the end of his term as Senator of Texas.
Frist was elected in 1994 during the Republican sweep of congress. With no political background he defeated Democratic Senator Jim Sasser. Eight years later he was appointed Senate Majority Leader following the scandal with Trent Lott.
Possible GOP contenders for the 2008 nomination are Senator John McCain of Arizona, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Senators Sam Brownback of Kansas, Charles Hagel of Nebraska, Governor George Pataki of New York, and Representative Duncan Hunter of California.
